Stigma and Stillbirth

The study, "Unveiling the Unseen: Exploring Stigma in Stillbirth Care through Interdisciplinary Narratives," delves into the often-overlooked issue of stigma surrounding stillbirth care in hospital settings. Recognizing that discussing stigmatization can be challenging, this research seeks to capture and shed light on these experiences through the perspectives of healthcare professionals who have witnessed them.

This research employs qualitative methods to gather accounts from clinicians and interdisciplinary providers who have observed or encountered instances of stigma related to stillbirth care. By encouraging clinicians to recount their experiences, the study aims to provide an empathetic and nuanced understanding of how stigma manifests in healthcare delivery.

The findings of this study promise to contribute to a broader awareness of the issue, help healthcare institutions address and rectify stigmatization, and ultimately improve the quality of care and support provided to families affected by stillbirth. In doing so, it aims to foster a more compassionate and empathetic healthcare environment for all.

Duration of the Research

Your individual participation in this study will consist of completing a one-time online survey. This questionnaire will take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete, however, you should feel free to take as little or as much time as you feel might be necessary in order to respond to the questions.

Study Procedures

If you decide to take part in this study, here is what you can expect:

  • Click on the link on the bottom right that says "Next" to begin questionnaire
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the questions on the survey
    • The first section of the survey will ask you for some demographic information such as your age, gender, as well as some information on your role related to stillbirth care.
    • The second part of the survey asks open ended questions related to your experiences with stigma and stillbirth.
  • Completing the online survey implies your consent to participate in this study

Potential Risks and Benefits

This questionnaire will ask questions related to your experiences related to stigma and stillbirth and may cause minimal discomfort in relation to recollection of past experiences. However, the risk for discomfort is no higher than might be expected during clinical care. Results from this study have the potential to identify gaps that may exist in perinatal bereavement care. It also has benefit of providing information for those who create training programs and services that benefit patients and healthcare teams.
